Managing for 28 years giving leadership to groups in both public and private sectors. I too mentioned during my training of some executives as follows. (I wish I had seen this article before I did that). 
&quot;In Supervising as a leader review the Environment: Observe, explore, research re Political, Economic, Social, Cultural, Organizational; climatic, any physical, natural and any other threats to safety of persons and assets of the organization. 
Changes in the environment and changes needed in the organization, its staff, action plans, Objectives, Goals and Targets.directing using
Authority must be appropriate for the tasks, the environment and the Staff individuals, ensuring empathic understanding of their needs, expectations to maintain good relations and rapport with all stakeholders.
Proper Orientation, Open effective communication to them of Organizations, Vision, Mission, Purpose, Objectives, Goals, Targets, discuss, Identify agree on each Unit’s/Group’s, Individual’s Objectives, Goals, Targets	and time needed, given to accomplish. Daily brief, review in debrief at the end of the day and do daily continuous, assessments. At the start do on the job training with guidance from competent experienced senior and throughout by the supervisor of the Unit, where appropriate to talents could do training in multi skills by changing task assignments or job rotation identify what they are best suited for to support them in career development.&quot; 

Behavior of the supervisor should be exemplary, ethical, emotionally intelligent, empathic and sensitive to expectations of the organization’s stakeholders, acting with fairness and equitability to all customers internal &amp; external including to females and minority ethnic and religious groups too.
 
As a leader, Supervisor to enhance  Productivity, Ensure updating of knowledge, skills in human relations, administration, needed technical skills to supervise units assigned to be supervised,  their processes, equipment, methods of production, be able to give orientation, briefing, debriefing, do inspection of work processes and efficiency and effectiveness of resource usage and ensuring giving, facilitating appropriate work assignments to staff to suit their Knowledge, skills, attitudes and career development appropriate to organizational productivity and attainment of objectives, with proper decision making, labour relations, conflict resolution, rapport building, Motivating
Performance Appraisal, Assessment
Handling shortcomings; Spotting, Pointing out in a confident constructive manner without open criticism, blaming; hurt the person’s self esteem, self respect and demoralize/ de-motivate, confidently point out with constructive mentoring, guidance and coaching to ensure positive corrective action and improvements to raise commitment, motivation,morale, responsibility, accountability, confidence to contribute productively and be also creative and innovative in areas person/s have strengths and competences, also recognizing and rewarding good performances and in 
handling Discipline in just fair manner.&quot;
