What a fabulous month of activity since our last newsletter when I spoke to you upon my arrival in Singapore in March from Dubai. My VP of Asian Operations, Dave Lind, and I spent a fabulous weekend in Kula Lumpur enjoying the Formula 1 Grand Prix race. Then during the week, one of my Singapore agents, Racheal and Derrick of Peapod Concepts took me to the Rolling Stones concert in Singapore. During that week Dave did all the training at the Singapore Institute of Management and got fantastic evaluations from the participants, while I just enjoyed the time off before returning to Dubai. Unfortunately, SARS closed all the schools in Singapore and the event to be held at the Chinese High School was postponed to June 1. Hopefully life will get back to normal by then and the students and parents will still get to benefit from that planned session.

For the month of April, I hope many of you were able to tune into News Radio 93.8 to hear Positive Business Minutes. Five times daily, Dave and I provided minutes based on the book "Up Your Bottom Line". View the minutes now!

Also much to my surprise, during the war in the Middle East, I was featured on the front page of the Gulf News Tabloid, thanks to my great Hotel sponsors in Dubai - Le Meridien. Not only do they take excellent care of me, they went out of their way to make things happen. View the article now!

Upon arrival at home I noticed I was also featured in Sharing Ideas magazine. If you are a speaker, trainer or meeting planner you should consider subscribing to it. While home in Ottawa I participated in the Meetings Industry Day and did a full day event with Excel Canada.

Dubai is a fantastic city and I will be back there, and in Singapore, in May with my youngest son David as we go on a world-wide speaking tour. One of the things I like about going to Dubai is the air travel via KLM. Not only do they sponsor many of my events, they provide service beyond any other airline I have traveled. Consider KLM for you next trip. It will be a lasting experience. Also in May we will be in Dubai, Muscat, Oman and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. For bookings in the Middle East while I am there contact Right Selection - Dubai [rightsel@emirates.net.ae]. In Singapore contact dave@bobu.com or Racheal [rae@peapod.com.sg]. I look forward to seeing many of my friends and acquaintances then.

Listening is the combination of two key communications skills, listening and verifying. Here are 7 tips to help you become a more effective listener:

    1. Listen attentively:
*You must make the effort to concentrate on what the other person is saying, not what you're going to say next.
*Be aware of your posture; the right posture enhances your ability to concentrate, eliminates distractions- and communicates that you are listening attentively.

    2. Verify your understanding:
*Pause, think about what was said, and then think about what you will say.
*Repeat what was said using different words-without adding anything new or your interpretation.

    An International Perspective on Listening
    .
    by Dave Lind

When dealing personally or professionally in areas outside of one's home area, developing positive listening skills is just that more important. Cultural differences, language 'challenges', and differing business and social norms necessitate a keener sense of 'total' empathy in order accomplish personal or business goals and to avoid 'self-destruction'. One wrong move from either a vocal or body language gaffe can undo all the positive relationship and rapport building that one has worked so hard to achieve. Active listening (and, when we consider true rapport building using NLP techniques (mirror and matching, LISTENING CAN IMPLY 'WATCHING' AS WELL) and close attention to other rapport elements will determine your success or failure.

Exact knowledge of social and business norms is a must.
