Happy New Year,

We thought the Holiday Season had ended last week until we received a visitor to our home from London, England.

I met our visitor in Dubai last November when he spoke at the UPO conference. He told me he would be visiting Montreal in the near future, so I invited him to visit our home.

New Year Skiing

I didn't know when he was planning the trip nor was I sure he would have the time to visit us while in Canada.

On Tuesday morning, January 5th, I emailed him to inquire about his travel plans and whether or not he would be able to visit us. Within minutes I received a reply stating he was in Quebec City and could fly to Ottawa by the end of the day. He hoped to stay with us for two nights but would confirm later that day.

I got his call by mid-afternoon that he was scheduled to arrive in Ottawa by 6pm. I immediately called my wife who was driving to work on the night shift. I told her not to be surprised if there was someone sleeping in the guest bedroom when she got home that night.

Of course my wife wanted to know all about our guest and I shared all that I knew about Matt including the incredible fact that he is blind. She was surprised and wondered how I am going to manage with him.

For those of you who know me, I know what I want to do, to be and to have but I don't think about how it will come together, I just do it. Well, my blind friend Matt is just like that too.

After a great meal and beer tasting at a local brewery, I gave him a quick tour of the house and he ended the day with a steam bath.

The next day, Matt was walking around the house with confidence. He was able to get around comfortably on his own from his bedroom to the washroom, to my office, and to every corner of the house.

I asked him what he would like to do during his first day with us. He replied that he had never gone downhill skiing and would like to give it a try. I could not believe my ears. Most people who have sight are afraid to attempt to ski but not my friend Matt and he is blind.

What an exciting day we had snowshoeing and downhill skiing. We also enjoyed a delicious meal at home with Matt and some friends. We all went tobogganing in the dark, and Matt decided to try it on his own following a couple of practice runs. Matt accomplished three activities he had never done before and all of them on the same day!

Matt was born blind yet even without sight he has a vision and plenty of courage. He never lets fear hold him back. Watch this e-minute video interview I had with Matt before taking him to the bus station. Also visit www.mattwadsworth.com
